18. and sentenced to die on Calvary’s cross.
Song: He Died That We Might Live Again
Topic Introduction: none
Flannel Board Story: crucifixion

19. He gave His life to atone for the sins of all mankind.
Song: He Sent His Son
Topic Introduction: none
Flannel Board Story: offerings in Leviticus (Emphasize that on the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies. This was the only person, and the only time, that this was permitted.)
Activity: Hold up a piece of fabric and explain that just as we can’t see through the fabric, our sins keep us from God. Try (and fail!) to rip the fabric, showing that we can’t bridge the distance that sin puts between ourselves and God. Now give a child a pair of scissors and have them cut the fabric in half. This symbolizes how the atonement makes it possible to return to God’s presence. Now read Mark 15:38–this is the first event after the death of Jesus (v37). Or, if you are feeling really ambitious, you can make a model of the tabernacle (the link will take you to a PDF).
20. His was a great vicarious gift in behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.
Song: Help Us, O God, to Understand
Topic Introduction: explain ‘vicarious’
Flannel Board Story: Gethsemane
Activity: Retell this story (thanks, Kaimi).
21. We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary.
Song: I Lived In Heaven
Topic Introduction: explain ‘solemnly’ and ‘testify’
Flannel Board Story: pre-mortal life, or Second Coming
Activity: Make a timeline. Using a length of butcher paper (or a bunch of smaller papers taped together), write ‘Bethlehem’ at about 1/4 of the way across the paper and ‘Calvary’ at about 3/4 of the way across the paper. Discuss what happened at Bethlehem and Calvary. (You can draw pictures if you would like, or print out clip art to tape up.) Then ask, “What happened between Bethlehem and Calvary?” and write or draw or paste events from Jesus’ life in the appropriate space. Then ask, “What happened to Jesus before Bethlehem?” and write/draw/paste events in. Do the same for “What happened after Calvary?”
Thank you!
Now that I am teaching 9-year-olds, the need for explanations of terminology is in clear focus. These kids are going to have a GREAT vocabulary.
Thank you. Our family loves these … we’re probably still back on February ones, but they are great, even for a 1 and 3 year old.
