10. He went about doing good, yet was despised for it.
Song: Choose the Right
Topic Introduction: none
Flannel Board Story: Raising of Lazarus (point: they try to kill Jesus right after)
Activity: Here’s a real upper of an activity: make a huge list of commandments and then make a list of ways you might be despised if you keep them! (For example: if you keep the Word of Wisdom, you might miss out on social opportunities/career advancement.) Then discuss *why* we keep the commandments when we know these things might result. For older kids, I might read them “The Uses of Adversity.”
11. His gospel was a message of peace and goodwill.
Song: Keep the Commandments
Topic Introduction: none
Flannel Board Story: Sermon on the Mount
Activity: Explain and demonstrate Jesus’ teaching on nonviolence in Matthew 5:38-41, following Walter Wink’s explanation, available here.
12. He entreated all to follow his example.
Song: I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus
Topic Introduction: “entreated”
Flannel Board Story: Fishers of Men (the calling of the disciples)
Activity: Cut out about a dozen fish shapes. Pass them out and have everyone write ways we can follow Jesus’ example on the fish. Put a paper clip on each fish. Then you can ‘go fishing’ with a fishing pole with a magnet on the end and discuss what is written on each fish.
13. He walked the roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead.
Song: I Believe In Christ
Topic Introduction: none
Flannel Board Story: Jesus Heals a Blind Man
Activity: Explain that the ability to heal the blind was associated with the Messiah. Talk about the idea of Jesus healing our symbolic blindness. Practice walking around with a blindfold on, then with unknown obstacles in the way, then with people calling out various incorrect instructions to you. Discuss how Jesus can remove our ‘blindness’ if we allow him to.
I just wanted to say thank you for these great ideas. We’ve been using most of them in our family this year and the quality of our FHEs have really improved. You have a gift for thinking of relevant activities that really engage children. Thank you so much for sharing! Our boys (8,6,4) are really motivated to memorize The Living Christ, and having not done any memorization with them before I’m amazed at their ability. Even the 4yo.
Julie, you have such great ideas. They are so helpful. Always appreciate these posts.
