Kristine’s pop quiz prompts me to ask a similar quiz I’ve had on my mind. Think of this as Memorial Day come early. Feel free to cheat if you have to:
Name your great grandparents. Name 5 of your great-great grandparents. Name 3 of your great-great-great grandparents.
OK, I’m not going to do so hot on this but here goes. Let me know if we’re related:
Earl Lester McIntyre
Maude Boone
Ezra Swenson
[Elsie] Walker
Luke Cosgrave
[Luella] Lindsay
Ella Winder
[Walter] Mackay
GG Grandparents
Samuel Houston McIntyre
Mary Alexander
John Winder
[John] Lindsay
[Elizabeth] Shanks
GGG Grandparents
William McIntyre
Mary [Melvin or Melville]
[Robert] Alexander
I put brackets on the ones where I needed the most help from my PAF file. Let’s see what you’ve got.
This one I can do.
1. William Astle, Elizabeth Shaw, Russ Hatch, Gwendolyn Harmon, Norman Nisson, Mary Olsen, Peter Christiansen, Elnora Jensen
2. Isabella Jane Bradshaw, Ole Jensen, Anna Sorensen, Beate Olsen, Rose Ellen King
3. Marie Erickson, Niels Jensen, Felicia Raynor
Maria Esantospiritu de Camastra, Pietro Zaffiro, Frances Bruno, Giovanni Macedonio, Desdemona May Irons, Welcome Cottle (that’s 6 great-grandparents from memory)
(I only did this so there would be a few Italian names and old New England stock among what I am sure will be a list chock full of tenth-generation Mormon pioneers)
great-grandparents: Ira Jay Parshall, Ida Annette Stephenson, Elias Almon Peter John Lapp, Emily Ida Rankin, Jared Alvin Taylor, Elsie May Birdsall, Lewis Moulton Hall, Sarah Clementine Day.
great-greats: George Bradford Parshall, Ann Elizabeth Saunders, Daniel Stephenson, Mary Elizabeth Jones, Almon Lapp, um,um, I forget this one, Barrett Dyer Rankin, um, another forgotten grandmother — no, her surname was Bates — what’s her first name? — Stephen Taylor, Martha Turner, Isaac Birdsall, Mary Margaret Troutman, Lewis Moulton Hall, Charlotte Pace Lee, Harvey Silas Day, Mary Lovenia Poole. Whew!
great-great-greats: Ira Parshall, Atta Bradford, John Saunders, Nancy Gage, Caleb Stephenson, Olive Avery, James Jones, Sarah Mariah Wood, unknown, unknown, I forget, unknown, oh, shoot. I give up.

And I’m done unless I’m allowed to go peek at Familysearch.org!
Chad Too — How about contacting me at AEParshall at aol dot com — I’ve done a huge amount of work on the history and people of Piute County (I do the USGenWeb site for the county) and I’ve got some odds and ends about a lot of your family that you might like, if you care about trivia beyond names and dates.
What a fun challenge, Frank! I can do only my mother’s side, because there was a rift in my father’s family and we have lost track of them. Isn’t that sad?
Great Grandparents:
Lafayette and Alsina Brimhall Holbrook (I remember them both. Lafeyette lived for a time with his own grandfather, Chandler Holbrook, who was a pioneer. SO I remember a man who lived with a pioneer. Amazing!)
Great Great Grandparents
Lafayette Holbrook and his wife whazzername, and George Washington Brimhall and his wife “The Wife” (Fascinating that I can’t recall the women’s names! What does that suggest?)
Great Great Great Grandparents
Chandler and Eunice Holbrook, George Washington Brimhall and “the Mrs.”
My, my–I’m actually surprised at how patriarchal this is! I can’t remember the women’s maiden names and often I can’t remember their first names! Very instructive! Thanks for the challenge!
Thanks for all those who’ve so far taken up the challenge (plus you lurking types who took it up at home). For some reason I really like the fact that so many of us know so many of our own ancestors.
Margaret, perhaps an optimistic take is that for those with lots of Mormon ancestry, the female lines are where much of our current genealogical effort will be focused, the male (and easier) lines being so much more completed? I know that the only decent family history work I’ve done has been to creep up the line of my great great grandmother, and I think this is true
Ardis — How fantastic that you looked at my list and were immediately able to pinpoint Piute County, UT! I’ll drop you an off-list note.
Interestingly enough, I’ve found that on most of these lines if I go back to the GGG level most of these folks come from various areas of the Carolinas all of which are now within a two hour drive of where I live. They, of course, ended up in Utah as part of the gathering.

John,
We’re related through John Rex Winder and Elizabeth Parker (my great-great grandaparents and your GGG). Long time no see.
If those of you who are descended from John Rex Winder are interested and want to contact me off-blog (AEParshall at aol dot com), I have a few pages of excerpts from the Anthon Lund diaries about JRW’s last illness and death, that might be of interest to family members. These bits are not in the recently published Lund diaries.
I am related to at least two of you.
Marjorie Conder: William Draper & Lydia Lathrop are among my 5th great grandparents. To be precise, they were my father’s mother’s father’s mother’s father’s mother’s parents.
Liesl: Newel Knight is among my 4th great grandparents. He was my father’s mother’s father’s mother’s mother’s father. (By the way, it looks like in recreating your family tree from memory you skipped a generation–according to familysearch.org Lenora Knight was a granddaughter of Newel Knight, not a daughter.)
Liesl,
I’m also descended from Newel K. Whitney. Hi, cuz! (or whatever that makes us) ;)
I thought I read somewhere that Frank McIntyre was Julie Smith. I’m confused.
This is mine from memory. The unknowns are not really unknown in real life.
