Primary Lesson #2 Supplement
BOOK MAKING ACTIVITY: Tell your class this story: “Happy Endings†(The Friend, Apr. 1996, 28). Give each child in your class a blank book (five folded sheets of paper, perhaps with a construction paper cover and/or stapled along the spine) and work with them to plan which part of the Plan of Salvation should go on each page. Allow them to draw or write on the appropriate page as you go through the lesson.
VISUAL AID: Judy Edwards, “Sharing Time: The Plan of Salvation Offers Me Peace,†Friend, Mar. 1994, 14, contains a picture representing the Plan of Salvation. You could give a copy to each child or draw a large version on the chalkboard. You could also fill it out yourself before class, cut it into a jigsaw puzzle, write the review questions from the end of the lesson on the puzzle pieces, and then have your class assemble the puzzle as they answer each question.
WALK THROUGH THE PLAN OF SALVATION: Have one child represent all the children and move through the plan. In the premortal existence, the child wears a sign saying ‘Spirit Body.’ Sing verse 1 of “I Lived in Heaven†(CS, p. 4). Ask, “How many of us were there?†and tell briefly about that Council in Heaven and our choosing to follow Heavenly Father’s plan. Sing verse 2 and hold up a picture of Jesus alone. Tell the children that when Jesus volunteered to be our Savior and give His life so that we could return to live with Heavenly Father, we were so glad that we shouted for joy. Explain that the next step for us was to be born into this life. Have the child walk past a sign saying ‘birth.’ Explain that all of us come into this earth life as babies (show the globe or picture of earth, and the doll) and get a physical body (add a ‘Physical Body’ sign on the child). Sing “I Will Follow God’s Plan†(CS, pp. 164–165). Ask, “What does this song tell us that we must do while we are on earth?†Sing verse 3 of “I Lived in Heaven†and hold up pictures of Christ teaching and the Crucifixion. Explain that because Jesus taught us the gospel and overcame death through the Resurrection and gave us the gift of the Atonement, we can return to live with Heavenly Father and Him again by living the gospel. Sing “I Want to Live the Gospel†(CS, p. 148). Have the child pass a sign saying ‘death.’ Explain that although we don’t know if we will be old or young when we die, we do know that our spirit leaves our body for a while (take the Physical Body sign off the child) and lives in the spirit world (hold up a ‘Spirit World’ sign). After Christ’s Second Coming (show a Resurrected Christ picture), we will all be resurrected and receive our physical body again (return the Physical Body sign to the child) and we will find a new home in one of the three degrees of glory. Sing “I Am a Child of God,†verse 4 (CS, pp. 2–3). Bear your testimony of the Savior and your gratitude for the plan that allows us to return to Him. (Adapted from The Friend.)
STORY: “Before the New Testament,†Friend, Apr. 2000, 15, contains an illustrated story that covers the material in this lesson. You could read it to your class or you could give each child a copy of it cut into sections and have them arrange it in the proper order.
I’m not currently serving in Primary but have 4 little kids so am interested in presenting gospel materials to them. We had a great FHE along the same lines that we’ve repeated several times since it was such a hit, where we walk through the Plan of Salvation in our house. Starting in the basement, we ascended to different levels (the cold storage room is Outer Darkness) which are labeled appropriately, and as we pass the temple wedding picture we can enter the celestial kingdom (master bedroom) where there were white marshmallows (fruit of tree of life) by the picture of the Savior. It was actually very interesting to see the kids make connections (the playroom, earth life, has toys and cars and things that we worry about here; you had to read the scriptures on the treadmill in spirit prison until you’d learned enough to move on, etc), and my then 3 year old was so excited about the marshmallows that when we repeated it he wanted to go straight to heaven and skip the other parts. Don’t know if any of that would incorporate into your sharing time, but it worked well at home. I always enjoy your posts and comments, Julie!
