DRAWING ACTIVITY: Many of Isaiah’s prophesies contain very vivid imagery. Give each student in your class one of these scripture references: Isaiah 2:2, 2:4, 11:6-8, 40:4, 45:23, 54:10, 63:2, 66:15. Give each child a piece of paper and pencil and ask them to draw a picture of their verse. As they do this, write the list of scripture references on the board. Then, show the class what the others have drawn and have them look up the references on the board and see if they can figure out which picture goes with which reference. Explain to your students that sometimes Isaiah can be difficult to understand because the images he used are not clear to us.
MATCHING GAME: Write each of these scripture references on a separate index card: Isaiah 7:4, Matthew 1:23, Isaiah 9:6-7, Matthew 2:2, Isaiah 11:10-11, Matthew 1:6 and 16, Isaiah 53:5-6, Matthew 27:50. (Note that each prophecy from Isaiah is fulfilled by the passage from Matthew that is listed immediately after it.) You could use them to play a concentration-type game. Or, for a more physical variant, you could tape the cards up around the classroom and have your students find the matching pairs.
TIME MACHINE: “Isaiah and the Time Machine, Friend, Aug. 1994, 16, is a short story about Isaiah that you may want to read to your class. As a variation on this story and the drawing activity above, you could bring a large cardboard box to class and have your students draw some images from Isaiah on it.
FLANNEL BOARD: “Isaiah Prophesies of the Savior, Friend, Mar. 1998, 34, contains pictures that could be made into flannel board figures or a simply coloring page for your class.
COMIC: “Matt and Mandy, Friend, Aug. 2006, 33, contains a nice, brief comic strip about Isaiah. Another Isaiah comic is: Tryn Paxton, “Isaiah and King Hezekiah, Friend, Aug. 1990, inside back cover.
ISAIAH CRAFT: “Isaiah Prophesies of the Savior, Friend, Dec. 2001, 36, contains a craft project that you could make in advance to use as you teach the scripture passages or that your students could make in class.
Thank you so much for posting some of your ideas doe primary up here. My husband and I had been searching for something that would really get the kids excited and you helped! We went to Home Depot, got a super huge card board box, wrapped it in paper, to create a nice drawing surface and made a ‘Time Machine”. For class, we read the kids the Friend article “Isaiah and the Time Machine”. Each child was then given one of Isaiah prohesies to write on the ‘Time Machine” and then decorate it any way they liked. We brought, colored paper, markers, crayons, feathers, cup cake holders, sissors and glue. It was a hit. The class was fun and everyone was happy!
Thanks for your Help!!!
I was just curious if your lesson 37 supplement would be up soon? Thanks.
Probably this Sunday–we’ve had a weird schedule with the primary program, etc.
Your helps are great. I love checking to see what your ideas are from week to week. Just curious, do you have any great ideas for a father daughter activity?
Hmm. . . a father-daughter activity. Alma 19:16 says that Abish was converted on account of a remarkable vision of her father . . . maybe you could make that the theme and focus the activities on having the fathers communicate their wisdom and testimony to their daughters. You could also use Job 42:15 for an emphasis on more temporal things. Some activities could include: the father writing or dictating his testimony to his daughter (hm: do you have girls with nonmember or less-active dads in your ward?) and then illustrating or decorating it together, the father talking about his career choice and what the girl would need to do educationally to prepare for that choice, the father showing/demonstrating his skills/hobbies to the girls. I have to get out the door but maybe I can do more on this later.
Thanks! Those are some great ideas. If you think of any more let me know.
