BMS: The Brass Plates
MBM: Nephi’s Faith
(Actual thing that happened during this lesson:
Me: “So why did they need to get the brass plates?”
Nathan, two years old: “Because they didn’t have anything to eat dinner off of!”)
Scripture: 1 Nephi 3:7
Theme: The scriptures are really important.
Songs: CS #120
Thank You, Nephi from the March 1992 Friend
Resources:
(1) Start out by presenting your child with a long list of things to do. Ask if they can remember all of them. What would help them remember? Point out that it is very hard to remember things if they are not written down. Because the scriptures are written, they help us remember the commandments.
(2) (For after you have read the story.) Using the flannel board figures from the March 1992 Friend: I cut them out, pasted them on cardboard, and wrote the following on the back:
Plates: These are the brass plates. Why are scriptures important?
Treasure: These are the gold and jewels that they gave to Laban. What are some things that are more important than gold and jewels?
Nephi and Brothers: This is Nephi and his brothers. They weren’t very nice to him. How can you be nicer to your brother?
Nephi: This is Nephi. When did Nephi choose the right? How can you choose the right?
Laban: This is Laban. he didn’t choose the right. What can happen to us if we don’t choose the right?
Then, we hide the figures around the house and go on a treasure hunt. When the kids find one of them, we stop, sit down, and discuss the question on the back.
fix
I just want to say, Julie, that your kids are very lucky to have a mom who prepares such intelligent, fun, scripturally grounded lessons week after week. I don’t have kids of my own but I do have a darling madcap niece and nephew, and I forward your ideas to their parents each time you post them.
Kingsley–
Thanks.
Thanks! What clever ideas!
