I loved Greg’s post below contemplating a personified reason, staring flummoxed into space. Here is another possibility:
Reason meets often with Revelation to discuss current events. This is an ongoing, though not unbroken, discourse. One day, someone who looks like Revelation shows up and announces, “In heaven, parents are single!” Reason has been wrong before, so he is cautious about responding too quickly. Instead, he just stares, wondering, “Revelation, is that you?” (Of course, it isn’t Revelation, but an Imposter!)
OK, I just made that up, and it made some sense to me until I remembered the next line of the hymn, which tells us, “Truth is reason, truth eternal.” But isn’t the first half of that line just patently false? Or at least woefully incomplete?
