A Mormon Image: Sweaters for the Penguins

This image was too good not to revive the Mormon Images feature of blessed memory.

The sweaters that these penguins are wearing are designed to save their lives after oil spills off of the Australian coast. They were knitted by Aussi Relief Society sisters. Who got to put them on the penguins, I wonder? (ht to Jeremy Grimshaw for the link)

I thought the sweaters were to keep the penguins modest, but then I realized the sweaters are sleeveless.

I think it’s TCFW that the Aussie Sisters would do something like this.

That is by far the coolest service project I have ever seen. That would certainly motivate me to learn to knit!

Wow, and I thought the leper bandages that our ward knitted were a good service project. Next time, we’ll do the penguins (though I do think that penguins w/their distinctive B&W coloring would look much better in a ‘winter’ color palette than in bright green and orange).

For a missionaries and penguin story, there’s a Times and Seasons comment from last fall.

It is sweet, but this project for the need for sweaters ended like 5 years ago, unless they have had a new major spill that we didn’t hear about? The spill that started this project was back in Jan 2000 I think. They have received over 15,000 sweaters to date and most are being sold to raise money for conservation projects now.
