Elder Haight Passes Away

Elder David B. Haight passed away. (Link here.)

I loved his talks. Elder Maxwell filled my brainy needs, but Elder Haight filled my need to be comforted by a sweet old man who didn’t seem to have a text, let alone stick to it.

I particularly remember a conference talk where he talked about driving out to California with his new bride Ruby. Knowing that I would go through the same experience in a few weeks (wedding in Utah and then back to CA to finish school), created a bond that I felt for Elder Haight.

We miss you already.

  1. I was sad to read this but at the same time grateful for a leader who passed away at a very old age and who lived such a wonderful life. When I saw your post it was the first time I had heard of this news. :( Thank you for posting it so quickly at Times and Seasons.

  2. Thanks for posting this so quickly, Julie. While reading the press release, I was struck by the fact that Elder Haight and Ruby were married in 1930! As I have gotten older, I have come to appreciate the wisdom of experience more, and I am always sad to lose a valuable link to the past. But such is the way of things …

  3. I have thoroughly enjoyed the steadfastness of his testimony which he has given at General Conference the last few times. This Deseret News article shares a poignant story from an ’89 conference that was before my time in the church. As much as this is the nature of things, he will be missed.

  4. Ok, so this brings us down to 12 apostles. One more untimely passing and we would have only 11.

Now I have a Trivia Question, but no answer. Maybe Ken Jennings can help…

When was the last time we had only 12 living apostles, not including the prophet?

    The last time for 11?

  5. “Life is not a journey with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming—-whew—-what a ride!!!”
    -anon.

  6. measure,

if you want ken jennings help, you must ask it in the form of an answer..

“the last year that we had only 12 living apostlea.”

  7. “When was the last time we had only 12 living apostles, not including the prophet?”

1984. Elders Oaks and Nelson were called into the Quorum of the Twelve simultaneously.

  8. Nelson. Oaks had to finish up his pending cases, etc. at the Utah Supreme Court and his ordination was delayed.

  9. I would recommend a reading (or a re-reading) of Elder Haight’s October 1989 conference talk “The Sacrament and the Sacrifice” where he speaks openly about the panoramic vision he was given of the Savior’s life. (If you can listen to it, even better.) My wife was in the MTC shortly after this and he gave an expanded, more detailed version there. For all his grandfatherly sweetness, this witness is what I’ll remember him most for.

  10. Measure,

Presidents Hickley, Monson, and Faust are all Apostles, Prophets, Seers, and Revelators.

So in actuality there are now only 13 Apostles

  11. Prophets, seers, and revelators to be sure, but do we sustain the first presidency as Apostles?

  12. Actually in 1984 we still had 11 members of the quorum of the 12, not 10. If you recall Pres. Hinckley was called as third counselor in the first presidency, thus requiring to additional members of the quorum of the 12 to be called. So this is the least we’ve had in a long time (somewhere around the the 50’s).

  13. Well, a few days ago I wrote a comment about Elder Maxwell passing away and I said that even though I’ve been non-active for ten years, I still receive the lds news and I was touched when I heard about elder Maxwell’s death. I’m as well touched by Elder David B. Haight’s passing away. I’m not proud to be inactive. I never stop thinking about the church and its being true church on earth. I’ve read a lot about the new apostles and I can never deny this is the way God leads his church. I know whoever reads this will think a lot stuff about me and I will be judged by many who ignored why I left. I just want to say I’m sad that these great apostles past away for the fact that they won’t physically be with us, however I’m so glad that they did what they were meant to do in this world.

  14. Hey, can anyone help me out? I’m trying to find someplace online that lists all the members of the first presidency and quorum of the 12 and when they were sustained. I looked around the church website but couldn’t find anything. Does anyone know of a link? TIA
